Major Dennison has received pips enough to extend his water works up Middle street to the custom bouse and from Middle to Craven street on Pol lock street. His is an enterprise that ought to be encouraged. We hope ooo t see it extended over the entire bum nesa portion of the city. Messrs. Moore & Brady will clone their canning operations today. During the season they have packed about one hundred thousand cant of peas, besides dipping a large number of boxes un- lelled because of the rush upon Ibem from the farms and the difficulty of ou tlining aufliclent shelling force. We aee in ne of our exohanges that a ben was slain somewhere in this State, which contained 825 eggs in dif ferent stares and sires, from a No. 8 hot to a full sized egg. Now tbe sad ness of this affair is brought to mind very clearly by a mathematical friend who figure thusly: These 823 eggs, duly matured and batched, '.would have yielded a like Dumber of cbickt; now if these chickens had all been of the egg laying eez and had each laid their 825 eggs,, there would have been 880,(29 egg as the product. Then if that num ber had proved as successful as the Others, what "might have been" tbe price of eggs. Personal. For tbe last week or two our market has been poorly supplied with beef, and the quality of that which we have had has been very poor. When it is remembered bow easy it is to grow forage, corn and other grain for fatten ing cattle in this section, and the exten sive range where they can subsist and keep in fair order for six or eight months in the year without being fed from the barn, it is strange that our market is not always supplied with the very bebt of beef. A stock farm near this city would pay handsomely if man aged properly, and we hope some en terprising farmer will seize the oppor tunity and begin the business Number one beef will always oommand a gcod price, no matter how much poor stuff there i in the market. J uaiice's Court. Robert Hancock, jr., one of the new Justices appointed by the last General Assembly, was engaged yesterday in the trial of Mate vs. Lewis Washington fcr defacing, demolishing and injuring a certain bouse, claimed to be the prop erty of S 11. The map of tbe world nowadays must show something more than geographical and political lines. It is expected, also, to reflect the nations of the world, industrially and statisti cally. A country that builds thousands of miles of railway every year is de structive of old maps. A very valuable atlas, and an unusually cheap one, is Cram's Family Atlas of the world. The topography is simple and the maps are among the clearest on the engraving of any yet published in the United States. Besides the fullest maps, there are some special features containing in formation of great value. Compara tive colored diagrams showing the annual products, wealth, debt, popula tion, strength of the army and navy of Uie various nations. "Cram's Family Atlas of the world" is a library withing itself. It tell an exact story of the financial and geo graphical condition of the world, and what is more, it presents tbe story through tbe eye with a vividness ap proaching reality. Mr. A. L. Plummer, of Nashyille, Tenn., who represents his house at At lanta, Oa., will call upon our citizens and show tbe merits of this valuable work of relerenoe. lie takes orders for future delivery. The Baptist Sunday School Picnic and Kxenrston. Yesterday tbe Sunday school of tbe Middle street Baptist church went up Trent river oa the steamer Trent. Tbe run was extended to the thriving town of Pollokavllle, where the party landed and took an hour ashore in that inter esting place. Tben the retnrn trip be gan, aad another stop was made on tbe river bank, the dinner served on the boat, and a general ramble on the shore was enjoyed by all who felt so inclined, and a great many seemed inclined. The dinner was a sumptuous repast and in superabundance, if a pionij can ever have that Indescribable quantity. Every one had a plenty and there was a plenty left. Old and young enjoyed the day; some in singing, some talking, walking, running and racing, each much to his or her own taste. The N. 8. F. E. Co. band was along and discoursed delight ful music throughout the trip. Tbe river scenery was charmingly beautiful and must have rivalled the far-famed Hudson ia ks picturesque grandeur. After dinner the run op to Polloksville was repeated and some who hsd remained over there in the morn ing were taken ott board and the steamer beaded for the city. About half after five o'clock the foot of Craven 1 street was reached aad eneh-ae wished to do so were landed an 4 tha run. was continued dowa'Nenie 'setns si or eight miles aad those wkO wished to enjoy still . further pleasure oa the water were permitted to do, . returning in good time to attend the operetta of the "Three Bean or Golden Hair." Thaday wasasfiae for the occasion as could havs been asked, the steamer behaved like a little ship, the party was agreeable and pleasant, the) nnsio ex cellent, iha : lemonade alegaat 4 and abundant, and, aUln all, it ul af fin xeurtion and ptoaia sonHned s.i HTWTS VOTES. The Company is peculiarly strong l y reason of the character of Us tumim-H and Its linani lal condition with mi i forty years experience. It offers no speculative indm eiiicnts It has no special class of policy holders who are to get the dividends earned and forfeited by others. It has no stockholders to absorb prolits directly or indirectly. Every policy holder is, therefore, sure of getting his insurance at its actual cost to the company y.nr by year; the surplus earned bein re turned to him at tho end of each yer. It selects itfl r ink h w ith ureat care and n the healthy sections of our nun country only. It seeks new businesfl only at such cost as will enable it to continue to g.ve insurance at as low a cost, at least as heretofore, so far as the fall in the rale of interest will permit. Each policy now issued provides that, in case of lapse after two or three years' premiums are paid, it ih fully paid up for an amount staled upon the policy, without any action on the part of the insured; also gives larf cash values after ton years, w hich are pi ml ed in figures in the jwilicy; hence each member will get all ho pays for, and nothing of what any other member pays for.
